A Sponsored Child, Now a Young Nurse

With a blood pressure meter in her left hand and a stethoscope in her right, a sense of completion and security is evident looking at the face of former World Vision sponsored child Feli Rokhum, now on duty as a medical nurse at the local hospital in her village.

Feli’s story is one of the more moving stories of World Vision's work in North Tripura. The sudden demise of her father in 2007 left Feli, her mother, and her younger brother to fend for themselves, almost reaching the point of giving up hope because of economic poverty. The loss of the lone breadwinner would have darkened the future of this family forever, but World Vision's intervention changed the picture.

“The situation almost forced my mother to pull me out of school until World Vision heard our story and organized help for me,” explained Feli. World Vision helped enroll Feli into a nursing college, after which, Feli completed her studies in Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery.

Tears of joy and relief overwhelmed an emotional mother, who, after those dark days of uncertainty, never thought everything could turn out so bright. The moment of joy, when Feli came home to tell her mother about the secured job, will always stay in her mother's memory.

“Working here gives me so much sense of purpose and satisfaction; I feel I could be a use to my own community,” says the young nurse. World Vision's intentional investment in young people, through North Tripura ADP, has yielded results that are realistic and sustainable. Feli is a living proof of that work.
