deaths globally, 2.1 millionare in India alone. 72 per 1000 live births.
· One in every three undernourished
child in the globe is an Indian.
· Approx 25 million births occur
every year in India out of whichapprox 1.57 million children die before one year of age and approx 1
millionnewborns die within one month of age.
· Only 23% of Indian babies were
breastfed within the first hour (in2005–06). If early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour is
enhanced,250000 babies can be saved from death annually.
· Nearly all (99%) maternal deaths
take place in the developingworld with India and Nigeria together accounting for one third of these
deaths.
· In India one woman dies of
complications related to childbirthevery seven minutes.
· 75% of neonatal deaths occur in
first week of life, which meansthat the proportion of U5 deaths by neonatal causes is
disproportionately high.
· Of all neonatal deaths, Orissa is
at the top of the list with 52deaths per 1,000 live births closely followed by Madhya Pradesh at 51
deaths.Uttar Pradesh has 46 deaths, Rajasthan has 45 and Chhattisgarh has 43.
· 70 per cent of all infant deaths
in India are concentrated ineight states: Bihar, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Andhra
Pradesh,Maharashtra and Gujarat.
· Of the 19 million low-birth-weightinfants born in South Asia, 8.3 million are
in India alone. India also accountsfor 35% of the developing world’s LBW
