On the path towards progress
“I want to become a scientist like
Abdul Kalam” says twelve-year-old Deepak, who is in Class VII
Life had not been easy for
Deepak. Born to poor parents in the slums of Chennai, Deepak did not have access to even the basic
amenities of life. With the father’s meager income as a sanitation worker, the family lived in
poverty. All they had was bits of plastic sheeting to make a roof over their heads.
Deepak’s mother Govindammal, says, “We
didn’t have access to water and no toilets were around. We had to use the open ground far away from
our houses and we would go after it is dark. It was very unsafe for us.”
Govindammal got
married when she was just 16 years old. I never imagined my children would live like this and go to
school without any difficulties.” Life wasn’t this easy for Govindammal when she was a child. But
with the help of a kind-hearted sponsor, her son is able to aspire
for a better future today.
Thanks to his sponsor, Deepak and his family are hopeful of the future. Deepak is working hard
at school and looks forward to the day when his dreams will come true. “Everything started to change
after World Vision stepped in,” says Govindammal.
Through the income generation schemes,
Govindammal was able to start a cycle rental business. “That helped our family a lot,” says she.
Through the Self Help Group, she started selling powdered masala and was able to make some
profit. Deepak’s sponsorship helps us a lot. I was able to access loans to
rebuild our house, for starting small businesses and my children get support for their education,”
says Govindammal.
All this was made possible because of one person who had the desire to help
a child and his family overcome poverty.
