Back in School
“I am happy to be back in school. I like science,” says Sangeetha, with a content smile. And why not?. Sangeetha knows the value of education. For someone who was forced to drop out of school due to poverty, Sangeetha has indeed come a long but meritorious way.
Sangeetha clearly remembers the day she had to stop going to school because her parents could not afford her eduaction. As she accompanied her parents to the fields, it seemed like all her dreams of making it big in life had come to naught.
With her parents struggling to make ends meet, Sangeetha had learnt to come to accept the reality of her situation. School just did not figure in her priorities when she was faced with the question of survival.
But, life seemed to have better things in store for her. A kind-hearted person came forward to sponsor her. Through a person she has never met, Sangeetha was once again beginning to hope for a better future.
Child sponsorship helped her enroll in school, once again. That was seven years ago. Through the years child sponsorship has helped Sangeetha have a childhood that her parents could have only hoped to give.
Not just that. Her parents too were provided with livelihood assistance in the form of small loans. Through the loan, the family bought a cow to supplement their income. “The cow gives enough milk to provide for my family. Now my children have healthy food,” says Perumal, her father.
Today, Sangeetha is a top-ranked student in the X standard. “I want to become a teacher and help other children learn,” she says about her dream for the future. And given her meritorious academic achievements, Sangeetha is surely on the path to success.
Sangeetha’s life is ample proof of how one decision can change a child’s life forever. There are thousands of children in our country waiting for someone to give them the chance to dream again.
