Little Nafisa is happy to be in
school. “I love playing in the school swing and slide” says ten-year-old Nafisa, her eyes brimming
with excitement.
Nafisa Jumma Khan was born in a family of eight children. With her father’s
meagre income as a construction worker, the family was struggling for existence. Although Nafisa’s
parents wanted to educate her, school seemed a luxury, way beyond their reach.
To add to the plight of children like Nafisa, child
marriage was a very rampant practice in the community.
Given the situation, Nafisa too would
have been married off at an early age. Her life too would have caught up in an endless cycle of
penury and hopelessness.
But, life had better things to offer her. Through a kind-hearted
person who came forward to sponsor her,
Nafisa today is a girl with a dream.
She goes to school and aspires for a bright career. “I
want to become a nurse”, she says with a determined smile.
Through slow but steady steps
child sponsorship has brought in a
remarkable change in the attitude of the people.
Awareness programmes focusing on the
importance of education and the evils of child marriage have helped enlighten the community
members.
Education for girls, once considered a waste of time and money, is now of
immense importance. Says Nafisa’s father, Jumma Khan, “I will send her for higher studies. Education
is very important for girls.”
Child marriage is no longer a threat for girls like Nafisa.
Nafisa’s mother, Nasri, feels that things have changed for the better. Says Nasri “I got married at
15. I was left uneducated. I will get my children educated. Education has brought change in the
village.”
Little Nafisa can look forward to the day when
her dream of becoming a nurse will be fulfilled.
