What Do Children Need to Thrive? A 360° View of Child Well-Being
Children need more than one kind of support to grow well. Education, healthcare, nutrition, protection, clean surroundings, and caring communities all play an important role.
1. A Good Education
Education helps children learn, grow in confidence, and prepare for the future.
Children need:
- Safe and welcoming schools
- Trained and supportive teachers
- Books and learning materials
- Equal opportunities to learn
- Support from families and communities
When children receive a good education, they are better prepared to make informed choices and reach their potential.
2. Good Health and Healthcare
Healthy children can learn, play, and take part in everyday activities.
Children need:
- Regular health check-ups
- Vaccinations and preventive care
- Timely medical treatment
- Support for their physical and mental well-being
- Healthcare services close to their communities
Early care can prevent health problems and support a child’s overall development.
3. Safety and Protection
Every child has the right to feel safe at home, at school, and in the community.
Children need:
- Protection from violence, abuse, and exploitation
- Adults who listen to them
- Safe places to learn and play
- Awareness of their rights
- Support during emergencies
Families and communities play an important role in creating a safe childhood.
4. Healthy Food and Nutrition
Nutritious food gives children the energy they need to grow, learn, and stay active.
Children need:
- Regular and balanced meals
- Essential vitamins and nutrients
- Safe and healthy food
- Nutrition support during the early years
- Timely care when they are undernourished
Good nutrition supports both physical growth and brain development.
5. Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Clean water and good hygiene help protect children from illness.
Children need:
- Safe drinking water
- Clean toilets at home and school
- Handwashing facilities
- Hygiene education
- Clean and healthy surroundings
Access to these basic facilities also helps children attend school regularly and live with dignity.
6. Caring Families and Strong Communities
Children thrive when they grow up in supportive families and communities.
They benefit from:
- Caring and informed parents
- Stable family livelihoods
- Equal opportunities for girls and boys
- Communities that understand children’s needs
- Local services that work together
When families and communities become stronger, children receive better care and support.
Every Part Matters
A child’s well-being depends on many connected factors. Education, healthcare, nutrition, protection, clean water and family support must work together.
When these needs are met, children have a better chance to grow up healthy, safe, confident and hopeful about their future.
Kiran's Inspiring Journey to Canada

Kiran's story is pure inspiration! Growing up in Kolkata she juggled family and studies. “Having to raise three children wasn’t easy for my parents, but World Vision India supported my education and helped me discover my passion for social issues.” World Vision India’s Snehadeep community project and Play for Peace programme, conducted workshops on life skills, street plays, and puppet shows which became platforms for her to find her voice.
